AAI Summer Environmental Research Experience for Teachers

Overview

This immersive summer research experience at Iowa State allows select middle school teachers to participate in a 2 week, paid environmental research program. The emphasis is on providing reflection on how the experience can be integrated into the classroom. Teachers completing the program will have a modern context that can be used for teaching the latest science.

By completing the experience, teachers will become an Iowa State Environmental Science Fellow. Iowa State will provide materials that can be displayed in the classroom to celebrate the teacher’s accomplishment – a recognition of their ability to bring the context of modern issues to their environmental instruction.

This program will pair teachers up with Iowa State University researchers with ongoing projects related to the environment. While specific projects may vary year to year, the program will address several key research priorities that are strengths of the University:

• Water Quality
• Flooding
• Remote Sensing
• Soil Quality

What’s included?

For a total of 5 participants, the AAI Summer Environmental Research Experience for Teachers will provide the following benefits:

• Research stipend of $100 per day for 10 days
• Room and board on campus in the ISU Department of Residence
• $300 classroom materials allowance
• A VIP campus tour for your class
• $200 campus tour transportation allowance
• Classroom curriculum sheets
• Iowa State gifts

Interested participants should apply for the program by April 15.

The program is limited to 5 participants per year and will be selected based on several criteria including availability of research projects that match the teachers’ interests. Participants will be notified of their selection in May.
